Everyone’s a mentor or coach these days, so it seems. And that’s not a bad thing provided they know what they’re doing.
But what if they don’t?
Like is there some kind of business coach school you can go to? Can you teach this at school? I feel like the best kinda business coach is one that’s been out there in the trenches getting dirty.
For me I like to know you’ve walked the talk.
Otherwise it’s like sitting down to get a haircut from a hairdresser with nasty hair…… you’d be nervous right?
I for one never actually thought; “ooh I might be a business coach, that seems like a fun job”.
Does anyone think that?
I spent 14 years owning a business, loved it but more so loved learning how to make it ‘tick’ and if we’re being honest – bringing in the cash. And then I wanted to make a difference in the world (as absolutely freakin corny as that sounds).
So I set about trying to help other women in business make enough money that they could go to the ATM, draw a heap out, go home, throw it on their bed and make snow angels out of it…..
That’s a dream of mine I hope to play out at some point………
Anyway, nek minute…. seems I am a business coach.
In my 14 years in business I never once even thought to hire a business coach. I had the arrogance that comes with a certain youth and if I’m being honest it often served me well.
Until I wanted more.
Until I wanted to extend myself beyond my comfort zone into the unknown.
Until I was ready to admit, I was done with playing small (ish).
Now I’m humble enough to admit I have a lot to learn and if I’m going to be competitive in the rapidly changing landscape of entrepreneurship, well then I’m going to need a lot of help.
So here are my;
5 reason’s why you’ don’t’ need a business coach
- You have it all. Yep, you’re nailing it, there is no where else to go. You’ve reached the top. And whilst there is a hint of sarcasm to this line, there is also some merit. Honestly, I spent a dozen years in business moving forward at a pace I was perfectly content with. So you could legit be sitting pretty in your sweet spot and that is a ok.
- You can’t afford it…..JOKING – this is not a reason and if you’re desperate for help and fully believe you have what it takes to make your business work, then I will personally go ‘Will Smith’ on your face if I hear you say ‘you can’t afford it’. Get a part time job or steal from your mother if that’s what it takes, because if there is one thing I know for sure, it’s that if you want something bad enough, you will do anything to make it happen.
- The universe ain’t allowing it ‘right now’ – there’s procrastination and excuse making (as I busted your balls for in point 2) and there are legit life circumstances that are out of your control that restrict your bandwidth for periods of time and that is ok. I have been there. Last year my best friend and business partner passed away, I sold my main business and primary source of income, plus my marriage ended and I was forced to move house. I literally had to give myself some space to cope with ‘life’ and it was annoying and frustrating but here I am…. not entirely nuts as a result. Sometimes life throws you bones and it ain’t the right time. And that’s ok.
- You’ve been burnt before – Oh this I get! There is nothing more annoying on this earth than forking out a tonne of money to invest in yourself and getting nothing out of it. Feeling totally ripped off! We’ve all been there. The reality is – it happens! But you know that saying “one bad apple spoils the bunch”? There are incredibly valuable business coaches and mentors out there, just do your homework.
- You need therapy first – Again with the corny but mindset is EVERYTHING. I’d go as far as to say it trumps learning how to run a business in the first place. If you don’t believe with every inch of your being that you can be successful in your business, then start there. Get yourself a mindset coach or some serious therapy before you find a business coach. That being said, a good business coach (like me) will incorporate this into your program.
