6 Bloody good reasons your business needs social media

Why would you need Facebook? Why would you need any social media? I mean seriously, what successful businesses do you see on social media these days? Yep, I’m joking they’re all on there.

If we had a dollar for every time a business said to us “do we really need facebook?” or “seems like a waste of time” we would be sun baking on an island in Mauritius dripped in diamonds. In case you’ve missed the memo, we are pretty passionate about the benefits of social media for small business (when done right).

WHY YOU NEED FACEBOOK FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

Facebook provides you the platform to build a community for your business. You can track your customers satisfaction with reviews & feedback, keep the conversation spinning with compelling content, gauge whats trending, share opinions & advertise your brand through your eyes. Facebook gives you the ability to reach out to customers you didn’t even know existed.

FACEBOOK IS GOOD FOR SEO

There’s that dirty word again, SEO.
Having a facebook page for your business can be an effective way to direct traffic to your website or blog. Checked your website analytics lately? In some cases, you will find that your website has more traffic generated from Facebook & Instagram then anywhere else. I had someone recently say to me “What is the point of facebook if we have a website?” (insert in hale, exhale here).

Unless your website is a blog, then you need more tools for your trade, i.e –  Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter – they are all used to direct traffic to your website (or should be).  They’re an ever evolving platform that need to be utilised constantly to advertise & market your business in order to “stay in the game” or keep up with your competitors.

YOUR BUSINESS IS IN EVERY ONES FACE, EVERY. SINGLE. DAY

What is the first thing 75% of people do in the morning? They roll over, pick up there phone, and they scroll through there social media accounts. With over 750 million active facebook pages, thats a hell of a big reach of potential views & customers before 7am.

Every single day you are putting your brand, your vision, your work in the faces of potentially millions of people. An increasing amount of people are using social media to find products, services & brands to help their every day needs. Social media makes it easy for customers to find you.

I don’t know the actual stats on this, it seems to get higher at every workshop I attend, but it used to be something like your customer needs to see your branding 7 times before they would trust you enough to buy from you. But now with all the noise online, its more like 13 times (or 623, I can’t remember).

YOUR COMPETITION IS ON IT SO YOU SHOULD BE TOO

You do not want to fall behind on the competition. You need to be showcasing what it is that you do & offer differently to the rest & social media is just the platform to be doing this.

FACEBOOK IS FREE

Ok, we use the term free pretty loosely on this one. It can be free.

If you are running your own social media campaigns then facebook is as cheap as they come. Hiring a social media manager can cost you anywhere from $150pw to $500pw but it is an investment that you will see a return on. We promise!

“WE AREN’T GETTING A LOT OF LIKES OR COMMENT’S, SO ITS JUST A WASTE OF TIME”

*face palm*

Ok, you HAVE TO TRUST ME ON THIS – its not ALL about the followers. The truth is that if you have a good look at a LOT of Perth business & personality pages, you are going to see a lot of fakes profiles. Like legit, tones of them. Everyones doing it (this is not ok).

I once managed a facebook page for a retailer. One morning I had 500 naked women become followers in the space of 10 minutes. Sure, as a small local business I could have let it look like we’d just had a jump in followers & I was acing my job.  But whats the point in that? They aren’t follower’s that we are going to gain from in any way? They certainly weren’t out to buy the clothes we were selling (get it? get it?)

Its not ALL about how many followers you have. It is about the authenticity & the quality of the content you are providing to your relevant audience. Which means real life customers that are actually going to buy your shit.  I would rather market to 500 REAL followers who I know are interested in my brand & are potential clients, then have 100,000 fake ones who are just here for the likes. Quality over quantity.

Phew, I feel like I just took a massive weight off my shoulders.

BONUS TIP:
Use your insights; your post might only have 30 likes and 2 comments, but reached over 1500 people. I don’t like or comment from my personal page on other business pages. I guess Im a “shadow user”. I screen shot what I like, forward onto my husband/ friends or save the link for later. Im not an engaging user (also known as a FB creep). But that doesn’t mean that of the 400 people I follow, Im not interested in their brand or don’t actively purchased from them?
